Land Purchase

Well I finally did it. After reading and following others adventures into the homesteading life I have started my own journey. I purchased 10 acres of land in the Ozarks of MO, site unseen(other than pictures). I was a little terrified to do it this way however it was too good of deal to pass up and it had almost everything I was looking for except a pond. It has a known well depth of 500 ft with good pressure and quality, 80% forested, several flat locations to build on, and about 20% pasture. It is also very south MO which should be slightly warmer than here in central IL. Another big plus is it is near a CO road and not terribly far from medical services if we should need them, with 2 young boys I am sure I will be needing them at some point or another!

I am hoping to make the drive down with the family in coming weeks, hopefully before it snows to get a glimpse of my little slice of Earth. Once I do I will post some pictures and develop a development plan to start building. Over the course of next summer I want to build a starter cabin so that I can move in full time if the modern world should come to an end, zombies attack, or I just don't feel like working 80 hours a week anymore!

You experienced ones out there, please let me know if there is anything I should know or things that you wish you had taken into account when you made your own move into homesteading.

  1. Congratulations on your new blog and your land! I have to hand it to you, that's an amazing way to purchase land. Missouri is beautiful territory and your photos do look inviting. I'm definitely interested in your first impressions once you get there.

When we first moved to our homestead, we were absolutely overwhelmed with how much there was to do. And we had a house and a few old outbuildings! Once you have a goal list and master plan though, it's like everything else, one day at a time.

  2. Thank you! The blog was started due to your comment on your blog.

I have the next 2 weeks semi off - off one of the jobs :) so I am hoping to find a couple days to go down. Amazingly enough deciding on the land and purchasing it was far easier than picking a building type, who is going to build it(me?), power type, water, sewage, etc... I guess that is the curse of options, way too many.
